At the Border
- Ramanjit Singh
Couple of years ago we were at the Wagha border and saw the closing ceremony. It was a sombre event to see two people separated by a line drawn by a British bureaucrat all riled up into chanting jingoistic slogans . The border is stuck in 1947. Tall grass and old trees you can sense that you are being drawn back into another time.
Kilometer markers showed Lahore at 24 kms and it felt so close but yet so far. Driving from Amritsar central to Attari is a beautiful drive with wide roads and then an abrupt end. We always wondered if there are people standing on the other side who are thinking the same way how we are feeling at that point. A feeling of sheer futility of this division. This border just doesn't feel natural, it has no reason to be there.
